Brits 'must beware of overseas mobile charges'

Brits planning an overseas break this summer are being warned to look out for traps and pitfalls when it comes to using their mobile phones abroad - or risk facing the need for debt help when they return home.

Consumers may not have a care in the world as they lounge by the pool and soak up the sun, but price comparison site moneysupermarket.com has urged tourists to "think twice" before using their handsets.

James Parker, manager of mobiles and broadband at the site, said the cost of calling and texting overseas - particularly outside the European Union - can be expensive.

Meanwhile those who use their phones to surf the internet in the UK will find the cost of logging on abroad is not included in their regular set price - so they could be in line for a shock when they return home.

"There have been cases where people have racked up thousands of pounds on their phone bill just by using mobile internet abroad and assuming it's included in their call package," Mr Parker said.

Indeed, one unfortunate holidaymaker was hit with a £31,500 bill last year after downloading his favourite television show to his handset while enjoying a break in Portugal.
