Debt help enquiries 'soaring'

The number of people in Britain seeking debt help is "huge", according to the UK Insolvency Helpline.

It was recently revealed by the Consumer Credit Counselling Service that it received more than 335,000 calls to its debt helpline in 2009, which is up 19 per cent from the previous year.

Spokesperson for the UK Insolvency Helpline Ian Boden-Smyth explained that it too has been extremely busy in recent times.

"In the last five years we have doubled the amount of staff, and we have had to invest heavily in call centre technology," he said.

"We have seen huge demand."

He added that he expects this demand to continue to rise in the first three months of 2010, with debt help enquiries increasing more steadily after Easter and the school holidays.

Mr Boden-Smyth explained that if people find themselves in a tough financial situation, they tend to "worry about it after holidays".
